The PigeonFeral PigeonThe Feral Pigeon is the most common found in Britain. The most common habitat for these birds is usually urban areas, which gave the bird the name "Town pigeon". With these birds originally coming from rock droves, they tend to nest on ledges or on girders. To build their nests the pigeons have become more efficient by using our waste product. Life CycleTypically these pigeons breed between March and July but now are capable of mating all year round. The breeding population has been boosted considerably over the past decade by racing pigeons and domestic pigeons. The introduction of easily accessible food has also been a contributing factor. The Feral Pigeons brood consists of two eggs, which hatch in about eighteen days, and the chicks are fledged about 30 days after. These pigeons can produce up to nine broods a year. Diet and SignificanceFeral Pigeons feed wherever food is in abundance. Members of the public feeding them make problems worse. ControlVarious methods for controlling this species are allowed by law. A full inspection of the property will determine the best course of action. |
